The University of Calgary’s Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning had a series of interactive re-imaginations of anti-racist futures through stories on Sunday.

A University of Calgary-supported community-centred research project to help newcomer youths of colour find a sense of belonging through art, cinema, code and other creative technologies, will be hosting what may be its final exhibit later this month.

Community partner organizations supporting the exhibit include Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, Calgary Immigrant Women's Association, Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth and Centre for Newcomers. The installation is open from 2 to 6 p.m. on Dec 17 in the foyer of the Taylor Institute. Admission is free, but registration is required.

Love, friendships, grief and pain are all part of an upcoming evening of interactive art by refugee youth titled Landings: Anti-Racist Futures in Stories.

The event on March 28 will feature five stations created by 30 refugee youth, telling the stories of newcomers in Calgary using mediums such as computer simulations, sketch and stop-motion animation, short documentaries, and songs. Through their art, the contributors, ranging in age from 14 to 21, will reimagine resettlement in an anti-racist framework.

“The federal government is giving $1 million in funding to a professor at the University of Calgary so she can study the experiences youth immigrants face when they come to Canada and what supports they need.

Dr. Pallavi Banerjee and her research team will work with BIPOC youth from four Calgary-based organizations – the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, Centre for Newcomers, The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youthand Calgary Immigrant Women's Association– to learn how to better support youths in their integration journey.

"Research has found that most programming for immigrant and refugee youths is built for them rather than with them," Banerjee explained in a Thursday news release.

The research team will use interviews and observations to look at existing youth programs across the four organizations.”
